"New Sugar Refinery of the Louisiana Sugar Refining Company at the corner of N. Front and Customhouse [Iberville] sts....[t]he building at present in the course of construction...occupies almost all the square of ground between customhouse, Bienville, Front and Clay streets...extending back to Clay street from Front will be a seven-story high brick building 52 feet in front by 119 feet on customhouse. Adjoining this and extending 100 feet of the length of the former building will be a 10-story brick structure having a frontage of 81 feet. The remaining portion of the ground will be built over with two-story brick buildings...The ground was excavated to a depth of about 15 feet and at the bottom piles were driven six feet into the ground and then sawed off level with the bottom of the excavation. These piles were capped and on top of this a foot thickness of concrete was placed. A platform of six-inch planks was placed on top of the concrete and then the lower tier of brick, nine feet wide, was laid. The brick work tapers to two feet and a half where the first layer of joists is placed. Mr. Alexander Muir is superintending this stupendous building, which complete will cost not less than $300,000. Mr. J. H. Schell, an old and experienced mechanic is engaged in framing the building.

The smoke stack of the refinery will be 130 feet high 102 feet of which will be an iron tube with cap, and the foundation 28 feet high above the ground."
