416-420-422 Chartres Street

Erected: 1834
Architect: John Mitchell & Benjamin F. Fox
Builder: John Mitchell & Benjamin F. Fox

These three properties, while under separate ownership today, were for many years part of a single estate. To simplify this study they will be handled here as one unit.

The present structures occupying this site are of slight architectural importance. The first floor street facade of all three retains elements of the buildings that once stood here. Granite columns still mark some of the openings, parts of the outer shell of the first floor facade remain standing, and 416 Chartres Street has its second story. Otherwise, nothing is left of what was once a trio of identical buildings.

These buildings were erected in 1834 by John Mitchell and Benjamin F. Fox for Philippe Auguste Delachaise, grandson of the distinguished commissioner who was sent to Louisiana in 1722 by the Company of the Indies. They were described at the time of their erection as "three four-story brick stores, each to be 22'9 ½" by 75', with granite pillars on first floor, one back warehouse. Valued at $24,325."

An old photograph shows them to have been typical business buildings of the period. At one time or another they seem to have had cast iron galleries extending over the sidewalk, but these undoubtedly were a later addition.

This property was originally part of the grant made to Marigny de Mandeville. In the 1760s it belonged to Mme. Maria Martha Devin, widow of the Regidor, Antonio Bienvenu, and it may have been in his possession for some time prior to this.

The property was evidently bought from the succession of Mme. Bienvenu around 1785 by Julie Brion, a free woman of color. From her it passed to her daughter, who sold in 1806 to Pierre Foucher, of a prominent colonial family. In 1834 the Foucher daughter, Marie Antoinette, who had married Philippe Auguste Delachaise, acquired this property from a partition of the estate of her father and mother. A few days after securing this inheritance the Delachaise family filed the contracts for these three four-story buildings, and their erection was undoubtedly begun.
