Sale under private signature annexed. Note: There is a break in the recorded chain here. Much legal confusion arose over the sale under private signature by Francois Duplessis to Joseph Decuir. Several documents referred to anent this deal seem to be missing. However, based on neighboring references, it is possible to deduce the following with fair assurance of its accuracy.

John Richardson (of the later firm of Kelsey and Richardson at the Meridian Hotel) has taken the establishment in Conti Street between Chartres and Levee streets, lately occupied as the Louisiana State Bank, and has opened it as a hotel, for the reception of his friends and the public.

This establishment was formerly known as the American Coffee House, and was the first public Exchange opened in New Orleans. It has been completely refitted, and no expense spared to render it a desirable resort for the citizen and stranger.

The house is spacious and airy, affording accommodations for comfort and convenience exceeded by none in the city. His bar is supplied with the choicest liquors, and shall be well attended."

"J. Turpin in 1814 opened his Grand Salon de Terpsichore in the Ancienne Bourse, rue Conti, for society balls. In the midst of so many ballrooms this might not have been noteworthy, except that the hall had been decorated by the artists H. Laclotte and Joseph Pilié, part of it to represent the Temple of Zephyr. (Laclotte was an architect, assistant engineer to the army in Louisiana, and made perhaps the most authentic drawing of the Battle of New Orleans. Pilié was an engineer, much better remembered because of his maps made when he was city surveyor.)
