Vieux Carré Commission Evaluation:

No change -- front portion facing Bourbon and portion at corner of Bourbon and St. Louis -- green; rear portion -- brown. 3-story brick building with balconies at the third level, which although it was constructed c. 1819 as part of the Pigneguy's Stables, has lost its early 19th-century appearance. In the 1870s the front building (Bourbon and St. Louis) housed a bakery and the open yard, surrounded by separate buildings, served as a stable.

440 Bourbon Street
Pigneguy's Stables

Erected: c. 1810-1820
Architect: unknown
Builder: unknown

This building appears to have been erected after 1810 when the property was purchased by Louis Ayme Pigneguy and Louis Badins from Louis Lecesne. The building on the site at that time was described as "a house composed of eight apartments [rooms] bricked between posts, roofed with flat tiles and planked on the outside, on the side a brick warehouse with an upper story, terrace roofed, and other dependencies, the whole constructed on a corner lot." It had been bought by Lecesne only two days before from Michel Aufoux, representing his wife, the former Elizabeth Chesneau, heir of Jean Chesneau. Chesneau had bought the house in March 1790 from Jacques Dumousseaux, who had owned it for only about three months. The previous owner, Joseph Paul had bought it in 1777 from the estate of Ana Boyer, Widow San Geanos.

Louis A. Pigneguy and Louis Badins became partners in the operation of a livery stable, a business which was continued at this location for over half a century. Pigneguy bought the adjacent property on Bourbon Street in 1816 (see 424-426 Bourbon St.) forming a new partnership with Jean Ayme Pigneguy and the Widow Bertrand in 1819. On the dissolution of this partnership in 1822, title to this corner property was given to Jean Ayme Pigneguy, being inherited by his wife in 1832 and sold by her heirs in 1841 to Pierre Chige. The Widow Pigneguy's inventory of her residence on this property listed "the vestibule, the bed chamber, the dining room, the office, the kitchen and the attic." This would seem to refer to another building. The City Directory of 1869 lists this as Charles Laborde's stable, Laborde having bought the property in 1867.
