Vieux Carré Commission Evaluation:

[Brown. F.W. Woolworth Store. A 2-story, commercial structure, 1939. Jones, Roessle, Olschner, architects. The original building at 104 N. Rampart (treated by the VCS as part of 100-108 N. Rampart) dated to no later than 1842. An 1842 act of sale cites the purchase of a "lot with 3 story brick bldg. thereon." An 1866 Planbook plan likewise depicts a 3-bay, 3-story townhouse with ornamental vents along the roofline and a second-floor iron balcony. The building was either demolished or renovated by 1939, by which time it was one in a series of 3- and 4-story commercial structures located along N. Rampart Street. These buildings were demolished in 1939, when the F.W. Woolworth building was built on these four lots. The extant structure is the result of a 1969 renovation, which included the expansion of Woolworth’s second floor retail area. The building now has several decorative arched windows on its upper levels, a flat roofline and a chamfered entryway on the corner of Canal and N. Rampart Streets.] [N.B: At the time the VCS chains of title were abstracted, the building sat on four separate lots: 1031 Canal (Lot 11508), 1033-1035 Canal (Lot 11509), 100-108 N. Rampart (Lot 11512) and 120 N. Rampart (Lot 11515).] [Squares in the 100 block of the French Quarter (those that front Canal Street and back on Iberville Street) are not part of the original Vieux Carré and have never been evaluated by the Vieux Carré Commission. Rather, their historical status is the domain of another city agency, the Historic District Landmarks Commission (HDLC).] [The c. 1965, color-coded architectural evaluation square maps for these squares found in the VCS binders were most likely executed by architect Sam Wilson, but they are obviously not official, as the HDLC was not even in existence then. The official color ratings given here have been taken from the HDLC’s current maps.]
