Vieux Carré Commission Evaluation:
Old rating -- All green with the exception of the courtyard infill and the Decatur Street side of 509 St. Louis, which are brown. New rating -- green. The four, 3-story brick stores at this address were built in 1830 for the Baron de Pontalba by Gurlie and Guillot. They originally had semi-cylindrical ground floor openings, were constructed of lake brick painted a "straw color" with pearl gray trim. In the mid 19th c. the stores were modernized with cast iron columns and shop doors on the ground floor. Then in the late 1800s, Victorian millwork was installed in some of the ground floor openings.
