Victor's Restaurant

Victor's Restaurant on Canal Street burned yesterday....Victor the original established himself on Madison Street, near the old French Market....[w]e believe that Madame Eugenie, that genial and stout hostess from Strasbourg now keeps a restaurant in the building where Victor began his career.

....Victor made a forward move and next opened on the old Place d'Armes...in one of those mouldy old Spanish buildings which were supplanted...by the Pontalba buildings....[h]ere Victor's became a famous resort for the bon vivants.

....Victor's next move was to Toulouse Street between Chartres and the Levee. Here the restaurant was greatly enlarged - in the capacity as well as in its business and popularity...the elder of the brothers who had carried on the restaurant for years so prosperously, about this time was tempted to go to Mexico and engage in some speculation, which deprived the restaurant of his valuable services, skill and supervision. He died in Mexico. His brother Jules Martin, proved a worthy successor, and with the aid of his nephew....George Martin, maintained the reputation of Victor's as long as it remained on Toulouse Street.

....After the war, Victor made another upward movement, and was established on Canal Street between Dauphine and Burgundy. Here for a short time the old reputation of this restaurant was maintained, but Mr. Jules Martin, losing his health was succeeded by George Martin....George died and Victor's declined greatly in popularity....the recent conflagration we fear will obliterate and extinguish this old long established and famous institution.
