Square: 42 Lot Number: 18488
Change: yellow with green stripes to pink. This early c. 1795 2-story masonry Spanish Colonial structure, which evidently was constructed by Joseph Reynes at the same time that he constructed 601 Chartres, has lost its historic detailing. A portion of its front façade evidently dates from the 20th c.

Addendum: It is obvious from the footage involved in all the 18th century transactions on this property that the two original grants of 60' by 120' F.M. on Chartres at the Toulouse Street corner were merged into a single ownership at a fairly early time. Though there is no documentation to substantiate this, it is reasonable to suppose that M. and Mme. Wiltz must have bought the adjacent lot sometime after 1743, when they acquired the corner lot by exchange with Arnaud Roche and his wife Marianne Birot.
Nicolas Sarde purchased the lot in turn from the Widow Wiltz. He died, his widow inherited the land and then married Pedro le Bourgeois. In 1789 Dona Margarita Renne Sarde le Bourgeois, with the assistance of her husband Pedro le Bourgeois, sold to Pedro Jourdan the property she said she inherited from her husband, Nicolas Sarde. And in this transaction the land is described as measuring 114' 7" on Chartres which would include a major portion of the second lot. That was further substantiated by a drawing by Carlos Trudeau, dated May 25, 1789, stating "land of Pedro le Bourgeois, 114' 7" on Chartres by 87' on Toulouse, bounded on Toulouse Street side by land of Don Miguel Royg y Girona, bought from Nicolas Sarde."
Therefore, to complete the earliest ownership of this entire portion of ground it is necessary to include data on the lot adjacent to the corner grant.

This plain structure, which seems once to have been two buildings, occupies the site of Mr. Reynes' warehouse. Apparently it has not always been this severe, box-like looking building. Interior arches indicate that there are substantial portions of a fine old structure here. Photographs from the Mugnier period show that at one time a wooden gallery, with turned balusters and colonettes supporting a canopy trimmed with bargeboard, extended to the edge of the banquette. These decorative details have been stripped away, and what is left is a stark box of no great distinction. However, judging from the photographs, the essence of these buildings is still here, and if properly restored this could take a respectable place among the buildings on the street.
The site was originally assigned to Henry Bouquay, called Plaisance, in 1722. By 1728 it belonged to Sieur Boileau. In 1731 Sieur Belcour had acquired it. No one seemed to hold it very long. Yet a map of 1734 shows this lot, already shortened in its depth, with a large building set somewhat back from the street, having front and rear galleries, with another fair-sized building on the lot. After 1743 this land must have been acquired by Louis Wiltz [Wilz?] and his wife Marie Tolly. For by the time the Widow Wiltz sold to Nicolas Sarde, this lot had been absorbed into the corner property, which M. and Mme. Wiltz had acquired by exchange with the original owner Arnaud Roche.
For a long time thereafter lot No. 18488 had no separate existence. It belonged to Nicolas Sarde and his wife who, when a widow, married Pedro Le Bourgeois. It passed to Pedro Jourdan, [and] then to Joseph Reynes, who apparently built stores and warehouse and used the site for commercial purposes. It was not until 1826 that this portion of ground resumed its identity, when Joseph Reynes, Jr. sold it to Mme. Fogliardi. It has passed on many times since then, and it is difficult to say just when and by whom the present building was erected.
"Even if the weatherman's winds die down, there'll be a tornado blowing on the 600 block of Chartres until Thursday night. Teresa Torkanoswky vows she'll open her flamenco room that night, even if between now and then there are such minor items to complete as getting the midnight blue corduroy walls up, the new stage surfaced, spotlights and dimmers installed...etc. etc. etc."
