"Francois Lacroix Being Sold out for State and City Taxes"

"...Everybody knows Francois Lacroix. A quarter of a century ago, in the building now occupied by Camors' Restaurant on St. Charles street he presided over the bazaar of New Orleans fashions. The house was Cordeviolle & Lacroix; both were octoroons, both masters of their trade. Cordeviolle was a very flashy, elegant looking fellow, a duelist and a "blood" of the first water. Lacroix more staid in his demeanor, but an artist, a maker of coats that passed muster before the severest tribunals of Europe, of trousers that made the dandies of Rotton Row, or the Champs Elysées groan with envy. They were models of style, the expression of the esthetics of dress... etc... etc... the dwelling at No. 70 Dumaine Street. It has much the look of a stranger, with its high roof and long dormered widows its shingles and its planks crowded in among a rank of neighbors all of brick and all tall enough to look down upon its insignificance, its weakness and its age... the house is a double one; that is, it is divided into two half houses... etc...etc.
