"Catherina, a mulatress, slave of Jean Batista Destrehan's estate, sets forth that for having done well, some persons in recompense for her services, have promised her the money to the extent of the value of her freedom and that of her child, called Felicite, aged five years. She prays that Gabriel Fazende and Estevan Bore who administer the said estate, name an appraiser to put a value upon her and her daughter. For her part she names (name torn away, supposedly Gabriel Fazende) and when the appraisement is made, a letter of emancipation to be drawn up and delivered to her. This is sent to Gabriel Fazende who answers saying that he is informed that Catherina is sick from a certain accident which has injured her. He consents that her freedom be given to her and to her child at the price of her valuation so as to employ the product in other negroes who will be more useful to the estates." [June 25, 1773]
September 18, Catherina states that as Don Gabriel Fazende has agreed to give her her freedom for the reasons she has stipulated she asks that Don Estevan Bore, administrator of the estate, be ordered to draw up the written instrument for her emancipation at the price of her evaluation, this amount she will promptly give. This is ordered sent to Mr. Bore.
September 30, Bore through Broutin sets forth that a copy of Catalina's petition asking for her freedom and that of her child has been delivered to him. He answers that in no manner will he consent to giving her her freedom considering her bad conduct, her iniquity, her dissimulation and what she had done to herself to become infirm so as to be valued more cheaply.
October 2, She has merited the right (she answers) to buy her freedom for cash as she had been a slave of this estate all of her life and was a servant to all of her master's children. She therefore asks that the administrators be ordered to sell her freedom.
October 4, Within three days Estevan Bore must determine the price of the mulatress, Catherina, and her daughter Felicite.
October 6, Don Doctor Francisco Le Beau (says) if she has an indisposition it comes from her great libertinism in this city.
October 6, Andres Almonester gives a certified copy taken from the inventory of the Destrehan estate March 1771, which was made in the presence of Cecilio Odoardo, Rene Isaac Dubrueil, named for this purpose by Juan Bobe, and Henrique Desprez, curator to Juan Baptista Honore Destrehan and defender of his five absent brothers. Don Luis Ranson was named mediator for the appraisement of the plantation and its belongings. The mulatress, Cathaline aged 33 years, with her three mulatress children, one named Carlotta, aged 10, Manon, 6, and a baby two years called Felicite, slaves all estimated at 500 pesos...
October 7,... The valuation of the mulatress, Cathalina, and Felicite, her daughter was made in union with her other children, make now a separate one of the two (Unzaga's orders).
October 8, Thomassin appraises the mulatress at 450 pesos.
October 13, (Catherine says appraisement too hight)
October 14, (Unzaga rules for another appraisement - this one for 320 pesos (included Felicite) and grants the act of emancipation to Catharina Mulatress, and her daughter, Felicite, for 320 pesos."
