Square: 18 Lot Number: 22677-2
Old rating: orange; new rating: yellow. Le Richelieu Hotel complex occupies this large, four-story building which was constructed in 1902 by J. Cusimano for use as a macaroni factory. This old factory, however, was redone stylistically and enlarged by architect Leonard Spangenberg for hotel usage, at which time the mansard roof was added and the building redone in the "French Quarter style" (French doors and third floor balconies added). In the 19th century this was the site of the gardens for the Forstall House, which was situated on Barracks Street and later housed the St. Aloysius School.

"A remnant of these most ancient military quarters, at the intersection of Chartres and Barracks Streets, is still one of the salient features of the neighborhood, having first been converted into a private dwelling house, the erstwhile family residence of the Charbonnet family, afterward the domicile of a Catholic seminary, and lately the scene of a terrible Sicilian vendetta."
— New Orleans as it Was: Episodes of Louisiana Life, pp. 319-320"Yesterday afternoon a new macaroni manufactory, the largest in the United States, was opened at the corner of Chartres and Barracks Streets...[the] three story brick building constructed for the purpose is the property of J. Cusimano...the building is 164 feet long by 64 feet in width and is equipped with the most modern and labor saving devices for the manufacture of macaroni. The first floor is devoted entirely to the manufacture of macaroni...the third floor is used for drying, and the second for packing...about 30 men are employed....Yesterday a large number of guests had been invited...a brass band was in attendance...the galleries surrounding the building were decorated with American and Italian flags and bunting...the banquet was spread on the second floor...The building as well as the machinery, etc. was erected under the supervision of Mr. Robert Palestine, an architect and engineer who received his training in Europe...Mr. Cusimano came to New Orleans as a small boy about 22 years ago."
