Vieux Carré Commission Evaluation:

No change: green. This archetypical 4-bay masonry Creole corner cottage -- perhaps constructed as early as 1819, thus making it one of the earliest residences remaining on Esplanade Avenue -- was acquired by Matilda Gray in the 1930s, at which time Richard Koch planned the present courtyard. [N.B: The front on Esplanade is supposed to read 31' 11" 4''' as can clearly be seen on the 1938 plan by F.H. Waddill. However, when the City of New Orleans Office of Property Management created the Square Map for this square, the incorrect measurement of 13' 11" 4''' was used, giving the impression that the Creole cottage at 640 Esplanade straddles two separate lots, which is not the case.]
