The Rampart-side of this structure was originally built in 1835 for William Nott, first consular agent of the Netherlands in New Orleans, and it was designed by James Gallier, Sr. The front building, using portions of existing walls, was largely rebuilt and expanded -- almost double the original size -- in 1920 by the Italian Chamber of Commerce. The rear 2-story slave quarters and carriage house remain intact, but later openings were punched into the Barracks wall of the slave quarter.

"Elegant dwelling house on Esplanade street at Auction. Messrs. J. B. Walton & Deslonde will sell today, at the Merchants' and Auctioneers' Exchange, at 12 o'clock, that superb mansion and ground on Esplanade street near Rampart street, formerly the residence of the Hon. John Slidell, and more recently that of General Beauregard. This is one of the finest and most desirable dwelling house in the square of the old city and will doubtless command the attention of all who are seeking to establish themselves in a first class house."

"Succession of Mrs. C. M. Beauregard... That elegant, well finished and commodious three story brick dwelling, together with the lot of ground on which it stands, situated on Esplanade...

The house is in all respects one of the most desirable residences in the city, from its size, location and distribution. It contains two parlors and one dining room, all elegantly finished and communicating with each other by folding doors; eight large bedrooms, with closets attached; hall on each floor eleven feet wide. The back buildings - two story and of brick - contain store rooms, bath rooms, etc. In the rear, and attached to the back buildings, there is a large carriage house and stables containing five stalls, with hay and grain loft above. Connected with the yard, which is spacious, there is a handsome flower garden, highly improved and filled with shrubbery and ornamental trees...

[A]lso a lot of ground adjoining the property above described measuring 31' 11" 5''' front on Esplanade by a depth of 107' 8" between p.l. together with the improvements thereon, consisting of a comfortable one story and attic framed cottage, containing several rooms with framed back buildings, two story high, containing kitchen, servant's rooms, etc.

...[a]cts of sale before Adolphe Boudoisquie."

"...we find in the Natchez Coirier: THE SLIDELLS, the elegant house on Esplanade Street, formerly the residence of the Hon. John Slidell, and more recently that of Mrs. Gen. Beauregard, is to be sold at auction. This house was bought from Madame Beauregard's father, by Dr. Mercer, of this city and presented as a wedding gift to Mrs. Beauregard, who was, as miss Caroline Deslondes, an especial favorite of that munificant gentleman.

In happier days, when graced by the presence of Mrs. Slidell and her fair daughters, it was the center of a most delightful circle of Creole society. The elegant hospitalities of the house will be long remembered by those who partook of them. The breaking up and scattering of the aristocratic and much esteemed family, will cause a gap in the society of our city not quickly filled.

Mr. Slidell seems to have settled in France, where he and his family have met with the highest social appreciation.

Lately, at one of the balls of the Tuileries, Monsieur and Madame erlanger, nee Slidell were standing in the presentation room, near the American line. They were presented by the Minister from Frankfort, and the Emperor and Empress both held quite a long conversation with Madame Erlanger."
